Abstract

Developing digital learning materials that connect mathematical concepts with real-world situations is important for strengthening students’ numeracy. This study developed and evaluated a contextual problem-based electronic module (e-module) for teaching trigonometric ratios to Grade 10 students at SMAS Datok Sulaiman Palopo, Indonesia. The research and development study followed the ADDIE model and involved 25 students. Data were collected through expert validation, teacher and student response questionnaires, classroom observations, and pretest–posttest numeracy assessments. The overall expert-validation score was 91.06% across four dimensions; teacher and student responses reached 95.31% and 98.55%, respectively, and classroom implementation was 98.55%. The mean numeracy score increased from 62.72 at pretest to 90.60 at posttest. A Wilcoxon signed-rank test indicated a statistically significant difference (W = 0.00, p < .001). The recalculated mean normalized gain was 0.780 (SD = 0.196), with 64% of students in the high-gain category and 36% in the moderate-gain category. All students achieved the stated posttest threshold of 75. These findings provide preliminary evidence of the product’s promise for contextualized numeracy instruction. However, the one-group design and single-school sample limit causal interpretation and generalizability; larger studies with comparison groups are needed.
