The Role of Reflective Thinking in Enhancing Mathematical Problem-Solving Skills

This study was motivated by preliminary observations at SMK Negeri 1 Alasa, which revealed that students’ mathematical problem-solving skills remain low. Students experienced difficulties in understanding problem information, formulating solution strategies, executing procedures, and verifying results. This study aims to examine the role of reflective thinking in enhancing students’ mathematical problem-solving skills in matrix topics. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed, involving 22 eleventh-grade students. Data were collected through observations, tests, interviews, and documentation, and analyzed using data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing techniques. The findings indicate variations in students’ problem-solving performance, categorized as very high (3 students; 85.4%), high (4 students; 68.2%), moderate (7 students; 51.7%), and low (8 students; 29.9%). Students with higher levels of reflective thinking demonstrated a deeper understanding of problems, selected appropriate strategies, identified and corrected errors, and articulated their reasoning in a systematic and logical manner. The study suggests that reflective thinking plays an important role in improving mathematical problem-solving skills. Higher reflective thinking ability is associated with more effective problem comprehension, strategy implementation, and independent evaluation of solutions.
